Amazon.com Review Well-executed design combined with solid, reliable performance make this Bosch belt sander a tool with noticeable performance advantages. The Bosch features a magnesium-and-plastic housing that's lightweight yet durable. The tool is nicely balanced, comfortable, and easy to operate--important features in a tool that's often used for long periods of time for removing large amounts of stock. The Bosch comes with a cast-aluminum platen--so there's none of the warping that affects stamped-steel platens--and it sands perfectly flat right out of the box. Like many of the sanders in this class, the motor on the 1274 is aligned with the belt edge to allow flush sanding into corners. The tool's only drawback is that visibility is limited when sanding into tight corners, but that's a small minus when weighed against all the pluses. The belt-changing system works well--we didn't suffer any spring pinches--and the tracking adjustment tracks the new belt quickly and keeps it in place. There's a variable-speed dial built right into the trigger switch, which makes adjusting the belt speed fast and convenient. Wood magazine tested 10 3-by-21-inch sanders and liked the 1274DVS best. We agree that it's a great tool. --Mark McDonald

Frustrating tool! Very light duty. August 28, 2010 RWC It amazes me that people are giving this tool more than a one or two star rating. It cannot be used for over 2 hours without begining to fail. It shows that most users are either not using the tool long enough before giving a review, or the normal projects people use the tool for are very short duration. This sander is sized and shaped perfectly for easy handling and general all position use. When the sander was new I used it to sand a maple butcher block top. After an hour or so the sander was spitting black graphite pieces all over the white wood top staining the surface. The sander was hopping around like the wheels were square! I removed the belt to inspect the sander. The friction pad was disintegrating. The wheels were clumped with fragments from the dieing pad. I had to finish the job with my old $49.00 Skil which is very light duty, but finished the job. I sent the sander in to be repaired under warranty. I got some resistance from the repair people, but they did put a new pad on, and replaced a wheel. I have since used the sander for very light use type jobs of short duration. Last week I had another job which required continuous use for 3 hours sanding a fiberglass body panel flat. I used no down pressure only gravity to weight the sander. It lasted 2 hours before spitting out carbon flakes again. The wheels are caked with graphite lumps again and the leading 25% of the pad is worn down again. This pad design is lacking for any project requiring continuous use over an hour or so. It looks like I may need a heavier duty tool to use for any surfacing type jobs. This one is only good for sanding edges or small lumps off of surfaces. The cost is too high for such a light duty tool. I hope they abandon the carbon pad for future offerings. The plastic back bone inside the dust bag failed on my sander also. It has small ears that attach to the inlet socket. The ears are very small diameter and lack robustness. I hope Bosch can refine this sander, as it is a good handling tool and would fit the needs of many a craftsman.
Premature death August 1, 2010 Bob-RMS Bosch 1274DVS 6.6 Amp 3-Inch by 21-Inch Variable Speed In-Line Belt Sander with Cloth Dust Bag
I don't especially pamper or abuse my tools but this sander died after 18 months. Several of my favorite tools are Bosch so we started out on good terms. However the dust collector plugged up early on and I couldn't get it to work again. Then the tracking quit adjusting. Finally it just stopped in the middle of sanding a big table top, maybe overheated? It's in the trash and I returned to my tired old Makita.
Excellent Belt that can be mounted on bench July 25, 2010 CA Gator (Palo Alto) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a very well built power tool similar to other Swiss made Bosch tool.
It has a beefy metal base that makes for a stable base and it dissipate heat well, so the handle stays cool.
What makes this sander special is how that can easily be attached to a bench as it has a flat side and top.
While Bosch sells Bosch 1608030024 Sanding Stand for 1274DVS Belt Sander set to attach it to a bench, if you have bench clamps then it is likely you won't need them.
I mounted mine with these clamps Festool 488030 Clamping ElemenTS 2-Pack.
The dust bag is surprisingly effective, but I find the dust port will work with a Festool 27MM hose (it is a tight fit) and so it is a good choice for Festool vacuum owners.
The variable control is on the trigger switch instead of a separate dial, but it does allow you to adjust speed if the trigger switch have been locked.
My only complaint is how loud the sander is and in practice you do need to have hearing protection if you use it for extended periods.
Since belt sanders are loud tool in general and I can't compare this to other belt sanders, I didn't ding this tool for noise since it works so well in general.
Great tool! July 18, 2010 k9 I have only used it a couple of times to remove material from door bottoms so as to clear new carpeting. Worked great! Light weight, easy to handle with good feel. Did not gouge. Dust catcher is good- not great. I would definitely recommend based on my limited use to date.
Great to put in Vise Bottom Up June 30, 2010 M. Larimore (Coconut Grove, Florida United States) I have had this for several years now. I like everything about it. Especially the ability to clamp it in the vise and use it hands free as a bench sander. The belts are always centered and change out easily; something that was a problem with my earlier sander(i don't remember the brand). I use this on wood only, so i can not speak for other materials.
