Amazon.com Sometimes, half an inch makes all the difference. But that's not the only reason to step up to the 735. Its powerful 10,000 rpm motor will handle anything you feed it--oak, walnut, exotics--with absolute ease. The three-knife cutterhead will make 96 or 179 cuts per inch, depending on which speed setting you choose. Mess is minimized with the fan-assisted chip ejection, which literally vacuums chips off the cutter-head and blows them out the exhaust. The 735's automatic carriage lock will save you from snipe by reducing the movement that causes it--what a great idea. We also love the redesigned thickness scale--it's big and super-visible, even in poor lighting. Those who do repetitive cuts will appreciate the turret depth-stop; set your most-used cuts to it once and you're always assured of accuracy. The home woodworker will be thrilled, and the professional's expectations will be more than met. This is a winner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
Amazon.com Product Description DEWALT's 13-Inch Bench-Top Planer is a powerful machine that employs a three-knife cutter-head and 15.0 Amp motor that runs at up to 20,000 RPM for efficiently handling wide pieces of material and deep cuts. The 19 3/4-inch base is made of durable cast aluminum and the fan-assisted chip ejection system vacuums debris away from the cutting. Other features include an automatic carriage lock that reduces movement, an extra-large turret depth stop for finding frequently used thicknesses, and a two-speed gear box for easily changing feed-speeds. This heavy-duty planar has a maximum width capacity of 13 inches and a depth capacity of six inches with a 1/8-inch maximum depth of cut.

Nothing bad about this planer . . . September 2, 2010 Neil Smith (Las Vegas) I build guitars for a living and make all guitar bodies and necks out of one piece of wood. In that context I run, 2-13" wide pieces of maple, mahogany, spruce, birch, beech, purple heart, sapele, babinga, black walnut, koa, and others. I've never had any problem - even with rock maple. The planer does an excellent job for both dimension and finishing cuts. I use it in my shop and not as a "job site" planer. I've planed 3" - 1/8" stock for headstock facings or tops. The height adjustments are accurate, the blades are easy to change, it houses it's own blower - I bought the accessory hose and trash can attachment, which work fantastic, no need to connect my dust collector. I also purchased the stainless steel tables that fit perfectly on both sides to ease input and output of timber. If I had to complain it is that this puppy is EXTREMELY LOUD. But it does such a fantastic job that I just keep my ear plugs handy and I'm a happy camper.
When used correctly - there isn't a better planer for the money - anywhere.
Excellent Heavy Duty Planer - and No Snipe! August 25, 2010 pintodeluxe After checking out all available planers on the market, it came down to the Delta 580, the Dewalt 734, and the Dewalt 735. I decided on the Dewalt 735 because when you examine it in person, it is much heavier and more robust than most other planers. The Delta apparently has feed roller issues. The Dewalt 734 is well liked, however you have to manually lock the cutter height after each adjustment.
The Dewalt 735, a Ridgid model, and a Craftsman model are the only three with built-in chip ejection fans. You can use these without a dust collector, and empty them into a garbage can with optional accessories. I use a Jet DC650 dust collector, which works great. No chips left on the work surface, and no dust in the air!
Automatic cutter lock - just set the height and forget it. Most other brands have a manual cutter head lock. The Dewalt 735 wins points here.
Large height adjustment wheel is easy to turn. Material removal guage is easy to read, and tells you exactly how much material will be removed in that pass. The Dewalt 735 material removal gauge is better that most, because it extends across the full width of the infeed table. No searching blind for a small tab like the Ridgid.
There is also a lockout knob that prevents you from planing your stock too thin. Set it at 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1", or 1-1/4". Of course any thickness between 1/8" and 6" can be achieved with the round crank handle.
Blade adjustments / changes: once blades show ridges due to a small nick in the blades, simply loosen the bolts with the included magnatized allen wrench and slide one blade to the side. Presto, it will plane like new. Once the blades need to be flipped, just remove the blades and set them into the self-indexing holes. The cutter head locks automatically when you remove the top of the planer for blade changes - very convienent. The top-access to blade changing is the best on the 735. You actually have room to easily do the job. To spin the cutterhead to access the next blade, simply depress the spindle unlock botton, and rotate it until it clicks in place again.
Performance: with shop-made infeed support (12" long) and outfeed support (18" long) I had no measurable snipe. The smallest feeler gauge I own is .002", and I could not slide the feeler gauge under a straight edge. That is impressive performance, but something I've come to expect from Dewalt. I own 8 Dewalt tools, and have been extremely happy with every one. The infeed / outfeed support tables make all the difference. Mine are just melamine 3/4" thick, with hardwood supports to bring the top level with the planer bed. Full 5 star rating, very happy with this product.
Outstanding planer except. August 11, 2010 Super Daddy This planer does a really good job. However It really should come with the fold down wings front and back. To help eliminate the small divots that happen when the wood comes on and off the front and rear rollers. With the wings adjusted right you can almost eliminate them. Without I could not. Other than that It is a powerful planer that produces a finished pass that barely needs a sanding. I still recommend it and would buy it agin. Hopefully the next model will come with wings already on it.
Dewalt DW735 Woodworking Perfection July 14, 2010 Paul Kachurak (Manakin-Sabot, VA, US) My partner and I have used his DW735 for several years now and have nothing but praise for this machine. I've read a lot of professional reviews and user opinions. I heard cussing and moaning about blade softness and snipe, etc., and can only offer my experience.
99.9% of snipe traditionally is causing by the operator and the angle by which the material is initially put through the machine. Learn the proper feed technique and "voila," not snipe. If necessary, buy the table extensions to help align the material.
I believe that the complaint of blade softness is ill-founded. I believe that if you are patient to work with both the material and the machine, the blades will exceed your expectations. The problem with most users is one of abuse by attempting to accomplish too much material removal in one pass. This is a finely tuned machine, capable of turning out an incredibly smooth end result on some of the hardest as well as crappiest pieces of stock.
I just purchased a second DW735. And, before I did, I went back to a professional review that was very helpful to me years ago. It reminded me why we chose the DW735 back then, and why I was so willing to buy another one today.
Please read Tim Hintz's review at [...] written back in 2005. I believe you'll find it just as helpful and informative today as it was back then.

This machine is like driving my older Mercedes. It simply runs like a dream!!!!!
Forget replacement parts July 13, 2010 D. Eby (Marblehead OH USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This WAS a decent planer. It's now crippled because I can't get parts from their site. I placed an order on May 7, today is July 13th. The order has been repeatedly delayed a couple of weeks at a time. But do they (DeWalt, Porter Cable, Delta) bother to tell you you're order has been delayed again? No! The only way you can find out that they've decided to delay fulfillment is to in initiate a search yourself.
Bottom line. It was a decent planer for a while but once it breaks you're done.
