About Makita's 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18V compact lithium-ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.

Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles--2.5X more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and 16 firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18V compact lithium-ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V compact lithium-ion batteries that plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more. The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.

1 out of 5 stars cheap drill, not worth the money   February 1, 2010

the build qaulity of this drill is very bad. yes it is chinese made but it should be properly made. you can notice the poor quality manufacturing when you use the drill as the chuck loosen by it self when you operate the drill. seriously this was a total disappointment for me and i should have sticked with DeWalt.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfied with Makita BHP454 Cordless Hammer Drill   January 30, 2010
troutbum (Colorado)
The first drill delivered was defective with a bent/wobbly chuck. The drill had been dropped placing a noticable dent near the nose of the chuck causing a severe wobble. However, Amazon immediately shipped a perfect replacement arriving three days later. The drill has power, speed and the outside finish is beautiful. This drill will deliver for years to come.

I've been using the 18 volt Makita cordless drills for a few years now. I have hundreds of hours of use on them. Since I've switched to using all screws in home remodeling, instead of nails, these tools get a lot of use. Extremely reliable. The hammer drill setting has drilled in every hard material I've thrown at it (up to a 1/2 inch bit). I still use the corded hammer drill for large deep holes in concrete.

I have installed 1000's of screws with these drill/screwdrivers. Never a problem.

The only con I've noticed is that the speed switch can become very hard to slide between settings. You have to rev the drill between positions to get the switch to slide. Annoying but acceptable.

4 out of 5 stars MAKITA BHP454 LITHIUM HAMMER DRILL   October 4, 2009

I've owned many hammer drills for my general contractor business.

The Makita BHP454 Hammer Drill is very good quality but has one major failure same as but worse than my Hitachi Hammer Drills: The key-less chuck spits out the drill bits and screw driver bits when you release the trigger.

The electric brake stops the motor quickly and the inertia of the chuck loosens the jaws and the tool drops out !!!!!!!!!!! This is a major annoyance.

I've called Makita and they do not have a keyed-Jacobs chuck as a replacement.

5 out of 5 stars Super Drill   September 17, 2009

After reading numerous woodworking reviews which identify this drill as the "drill to own", I recently went to one of the big box stores to check it out. Surprisingly, I found that it is on sale now for significantly less than Amazon's current price. It weighs less than my old 14-Volt Dewalt drill and seems more balanced. Fit and finish are superior. Power to spare and agile enough to handle my cabinet making.
