Limited, works well within those limits. July 24, 2010 B. McCormick I bought this machine to chip up the smaller material from thinning out a bamboo thicket and I hope to have it available for garden cleanup for at least a few years. Over the long term my usage will not be high enough to justify what I would have to spend for a really powerful shredder. Low usage is also why I wanted an electric device--for me, at least, the hassle of small engine maintenance just isn't worth it for a device I only use a few times a year. At only $200 I wasn't really expecting this to meet every need I have and it doesn't. But it is still quite helpful, and does about what I expected.
The biggest issues for me are that it jams a lot and it doesn't really have enough power to consistently chip 1" material. Less important to me is that it makes a very poor leaf shredder. Not only does every leaf has to be manually pushed in, but leaves tend to jam at the right angle bend in the eject. I also have to spend a lot of time moving ejected material because the eject is so close to the ground.
I have found that jams can be reduced quite a bit and performance is greatly improved by sharpening the blades before each use. Keep all the blades--including the shredder blade in the top--as sharp as you can and a lot of problems will disappear. Also keep your ears tuned in to what the machine is doing. If you hear stuff bouncing around in the shredding chamber and you can't see material coming out of the eject, that's probably not a good time to keep feeding stuff in!
Bear in mind the limitations before buying. If you are looking to chip up material by the ton or mostly have leaves to shred, then I would say that this is probably not the machine you're looking for. If you have some garden cleanup and small prunings to deal with, then this machine should work just fine.
Very unsatisfied July 17, 2010 RandZ I was hoping this would help reduce hard wood mulch to a finer grade. After taking it apart over 10 times to clear whatever it was stuck on, I gave up and sent it back. 80% of the time I could not find what was stuck. I was disgusted.
Good Machine, Great Service July 16, 2010 Ted 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
PREVIOUS REVIEW: First and foremost, the review of the shredder.
This machine has any number of very real limitations you should be aware of and very seriously weigh these limits before you purchase this item.
First and foremost, it is very poorly manufactured and vibrates so heavily while it is shredding that the wheels will need be retightened almost all the time.
Next, it cannot handle branches larger than 3/4" in diameter and even that is pushing the limits of this machine. Forget the 1.375" it advertises. That is a pipe dream. Even if you try to shred a branch up to 3/4" (and I would say 1/2" is a safer limit), the branch will need to be dry to the point of being brittle, as in broken by hand. The same applies to leaves. They must be dry as well, otherwise, in both cases the machine will jam and you will need to take some time to readjust it each and every time.
Next, the design of the product itself. You feed the leaves and branches in a perpendicular fashion. Slots are small, but this is good because this machine cannot handle larger loads. Larger loads will cause the machine to jam. This design is impractical for a number of reasons, but the biggest one being its inability to cut and shred as advertised. Perhaps if you were feeding this machine at a slight angle, there would be fewer jams and a greater capacity, but this is not the case. The motor is powerful enough to handle larger loads, but then there is the overall quality of the product.
Which brings me to my last point, the overall quality of the product, most especially the blades. I do not know what kind of grade the steel or iron is, but it is definitely the lowest quality I have ever come across. Blades will get dull very quickly (we have a sharpener, so this is not an issue for us), but it will simply not shred hard wood. In point of fact, when trying to shred hard wood, the cutting assembly completely disintegrated. Both blades were mangled to the point of being useless, the base blade assembly bent completely out of shape and the top blades completely broke off.
Under no circumstances would I directly recommend this machine.
If you use it within the realm of its limitations (and there are many), then you will find some use for it, but be prepared, due to its limitations, you have to work around them. In our case, it is still useful, if only because it is much cheaper than the higher end machines and far less costly than to hire someone to rid ourselves of our yard waste. We have a nice sized backyard and grow our own food, so having a machine like this is still useful for composting, but beyond that, not much else.
Now, onto Amazon.
I cannot say enough about Amazon. FANTASTIC SERVICE!!!! After the blade assembly disintegrated, I first processed an exchange on the web site. This went fine, but I was uncertain if the exchange went through. I contacted Amazon by phone and the service was great!!! In one day, ONE, we got a new machine and the old one was already picked up.
I wish more vendors took such pride in this kind of service.
UPDATE: I have now used the replacement machine for the last three days and in light of its current performance, I would have to say that the machine performs much better than anticipated!!!
This model does far more than the first model. It handles branches a little over one inch in diameter easily...........though they still have to be dry...............and requires far fewer adjustments. The blades appear to be more durable and the interior has a major difference in design which helps in terms of its durability (the feeder for the branches is just above the blades, which allows for better cutting, greater stability and far fewer jams. It still has it limitations (such as vibrations), but in light of these limits, it is a good machine for basic yard waste.
Eco-Shredder Gets the Job Done! July 14, 2010 yardman I used the Eco-Shredder for about 4 hours and successfully shredded my entire corn crop. It worked fine once I learned its limitations. It clogs up if you feed it too much green, wet stuff too fast but worked fine when I fed it the green stuff more slowly.
Adequate July 14, 2010 Colin Pittendrigh (Bozeman, MT) I use this machine for shredding garden and kitchen waste, grass clippings, etc
for the compost heap. I don't do much in the way of branches.
This machine has a good strong motor. I did take the black plastic top off
(just a few screws). The feed-scoop top has an opening too small for practical
use. Take that off and you can feed lots of stuff into it. With an occasional
squirt from the hose--stuff goes through at a rapid rate. Never seems to bog down.
The compost heap is happy. Gets fed new gooey green stuff 2-3 times a week.
I'd give it 4 or 5 stars if I didn't have to remove the stupidly-designed black
plastic scoop top.
