Amazon.com Bosch recently introduced routers that they claim have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1617EVSB variable-speed router features a stout, 2-1/4-horsepower motor coupled with an aluminum base and housing. The result is a well-balanced and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. We love the nicely finished hard-maple handles that make this router feel like a fine-woodworking tool. Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it. Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Another feature we like is the reversible motor, which lets the user place the switch and cord on either side. It's good for lefties, and for those of us who get annoyed when the cord always seems to be in the way. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in the Bosch battle to for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald

Great, except for a defective switch September 7, 2008 Benjamin K. Falk It's great when it runs. Not so great when you're in the middle of a project and it won't turn on. I am on my 3rd SWITCH. Very frustrating. Add the cost of 2 extra switches, time to replace and order and shipping, and down time and this is one expensive tool! The plunging base is also flimsy plastic handled and is not nearly as stout as the main tool. Buy a heavy duty Porter Cable.
Switch Problems July 9, 2008 Gregory J. Stacey (Kentucky) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had this router for 3 years and am now on my third switch. This is ridiculous. I thought Bosch was a good brand. Very disappointed. Would otherwise be a great router.
Bosch Router February 16, 2008 Greenhorn The Bosch router provides smooth consistent power and cutting. It feels Slightly topheavy when not used in a "D" style base- but most routers are. I recommend getting the combo pack, unless you plan on dedicating its use to a router table.
Great mid-sized router for all types of use March 28, 2007 Matt & Dana (Shakopee, MN USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Other routers owned: Bosch colt trim router, Hitachi M12SC, Festool 1400 Pros: - Adjustable speed - Numerous base options - Size\feel\soft start\etc Cons: - 2 wrenches for bit removal (love 1 wrench systems of the bosch\festool) - Dust collection is pretty weak compared to festool - Measured adjustment is difficult (example: I want the cut .03" deeper) compared to festool - Template system isn't accurate enough for precision dovetails Conclusion: For the money this sucker is amazing, the kit with fixed\plunge base is even better. If you could only have one router this would be it. I used this router in my router table, handheld, fixed\plunge for years before buying another router. Now adays it sits in my router table, using the undermount base that allows above the table height adjustments.
So far, soooo good. February 25, 2007 R. Almeida (Lakes Region, New Hampshire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had two DeWalt 618s, one in my router table and a variable speed that I used for hand routing. The variable speed died on me out of the blue with less than a year on it. So, since I had all the bases for my DeWalt, I moved the single speed from my table and looked for a new router to be my dedicated route table motor. This is the first Bosch product I bought and I did so based on the consistency of good reviews that it got. It's also priced cheaper than than other comparable brands. I installed it into my Woodpecker table, turned it on and...WOW. I love the EVS, the router is far quieter than DeWalt. The base, even though it's shelved is much smoother with less friction than DeWalt as well. This is a really nice complement to a router table. Enough that if my other DeWalt router fails, I will be replacing it with a Bosch! PS. I only gave it four stars, as I keep reading about switch problems. My router is dedicated to my table with an auxilary switch, so I'm saving the fifth star when the switch "doesn't" fail.
