Torque, torque and more torque! This package is nothing but power. The 14.4-volt cordless impact driver and the MForce drill put super strength in your hands for the toughest tasks. Despite being beastly powerful, this impact driver is shockingly compact and lightweight, with a total length of under 7 inches and weighing in at a mere 3-1/2 pounds including the battery. But don't let that mislead you -- impacts per minute range from 0 to 3,200, with a maximum tightening torque of 1,240 in./lbs. And the power doesn't quit, either, because the nickel-metal-hydride battery packs a greater capacity and longer run time than standard nickel-cadmium versions. Even though it fits snugly in the hand, it's an absolute dynamo in the power department, and the variable speed is smooth as silk. There are two nifty light-related features on this Makita, and we weren't all that impressed with them on paper. But in reality, the phosphorescent rubber bumper immediately catches your eye, whether you're rummaging in your truck, fumbling in your garage or scanning the job site for any left-behind tools. This set was a good value. I bought it about two years ago and used the impact driver and light extensively to frame in a wood shop, hang plywood siding, and build several storage areas. Then the tools sat around for a while, and the batteries are pretty much failed, which is a big bummer for trying to build a deck quickly. To those who complain about poor durability, I can say that batteries require special consideration to maximize their life - it is very important to charge them fully before the first use and to care for them as the manufacturer specifies. If you abuse them, never fully discharge them, only charge them partially, and use them excessively, of course they will wear out. I know my batteries died off because they lived in a very hot area and were not used for a while. I think I probably stored at least one of them dead as well, as the work I was doing abruptly stopped due to my wife's unexpected pregnancy...I will replace the batteries, but I wish they weren't so expensive.
Anyway, the drill is good, with adequate power. It is good that the chuck can be adjusted for very light torque for delicate operations (even though finishing the screw by hand is better if you need to be really careful). The impact driver is one of my favorite tools. I accidentally dropped it in a bucket of water while remodeling a bathroom, which did not damage the tool in any way. It's a tad hard on driver bits though - I got tired of battering standard drive bits, so I bought a bunch of hardened driver bits. But those usually end up shattering. I have also never broken a screw head off. The light is bright and way more useful than I thought it would be.
The bottom line is that these are great tools. The 14.4 batteries are adequate, they just need proper care...

I've had Makita drills ( 12 and 9.6 volt ) for years and I am very happy with them. That is why I purchased this combo package. I use the drill alot but I find myself using the impact driver for alot of things. Drywall, decks, working on cars, just to name a few.

Makita makes some nice stuff. I love this set. The case is great and has metal clamps, not plastic like some tool cases. The Fluorescent work light is the piece I use the most. It is great. Very bright. The drill has a 1/2 inch chuck which is a must. The Impact driver it fast, and a lot of power. Has a light on it too which comes on when you pull the trigger. I like how light it is. Better than some of the 18v types, they are too heavy. I would buy this set again...if I didn't already own it. haha!!
