It is better than Porter Cable. January 5, 2009 Robert Moore (Port Orchard,Wa USA) I bought this Router kit from Amazon, six months ago and have used it in a ton of applications. It is one of the best routers I have ever used. Its almost as good as my old Bosch. I dont think you can find a better deal right now. It has all the features and as soon as you pick it up you know its for real. I used it the other day to cut holes for speakers in a 3/4" peice of Purpleheart that I am using as the baffle in a set of bookshelf speakers I am building. It went throught it like it was butter. Purpleheart is very hard wood and is very demanding when rounding over end grain. I used a 3/4" roundover bit from MLCS, (also bought here)and it worked flawlessly. Plenty of power and the soft start feature is a must have. At first it felt a little top heavy and slightly awkward but I realize now that it was just different from my bosch. So it was more me that the router. It is well balanced. Better than some I have tried. Buy it!! You wont be dissapointed.
Finally, I got it right. December 18, 2008 R. Williams (LA United States) After purchasing several power tools to help complete some projects, I'd say I actually made a very good decision this time around. What started as a simple furniture building project turned into a rekindled love for woodworking. In buying my table saw, I allowed money to be too big of a factor in the decision process. I bought the best in its class for the money, but I should have saved and bought one in a higher class. AFter realizing the err of my ways with my table saw, I decided to do better with my router purchase. After reading reviews and specs, I decided on the Hitachi. It had variable speed, plenty power, plunge and fixed base, template adapters, and case for $190 in the Big Box Stores. Not to mention, I saw it featured on many woodworking shows and sites. I found a site online that gave me a superb price and I have not seen better since. In use the router is quiet (with quality, sharp bits!). I bought a cheaper set to get me aquainted with the uses of a variety of bits. These dulled quickly and made a lot of racket. Now as I am replacing them with quality bits, I find the machine is quite low in volume, considering...I have never needed more power from this router during a year of fairly heavy use. Height adjustment is a bit crude (imo), but still works fine. The adapters work excellently and saved me about $40 for a template set. I've had this router for about a year. It has served me well and inspired all sorts of uses. It is the most versatile power tool you'll ever own. This one is great in its own right, not to mention a good price value.
Great router for the price December 16, 2008 Dennis (La Vernia, Texas USA) I have owned several different routers and needed a reasonably priced router for hand held use. This one fit the bill. I have always been a P/C fan but now there are many manufacturers that make quality routers. I have the large Triton router for my table mounted router. This Hitachi has a real smooth start up, which I really like. There is nothing worse than having a router try to jump out of your hands when you turn it on. I don't like having to use two wrenches to install and remove the bits but I guess there has to be some trade offs for the price.
There is no PERFECT tool...BUT... November 19, 2008 R. Mead (Walla Walla WA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The perfect tool has not been invented yet. With that in mind, this tool comes pretty close. Right out of the case, you can tell you have an impressive tool in your hand. And when you turn it on, you know you have an impressive tool in your hand. I am a woodworker by heart but a long shot from a pro. I have been living with a old Black and Decker and two Craftsman routers. (I believe made by Porter Cable in those days, not sure.) I thought it was time to do an upgrade and so I put out a really good search for a good router. The thing I was impressed with in my search was the power of the motor. Eleven amps. I know the Bosch router has 12 amps but I was not willing to put out $100 for just one more amp. I have used my Hitachi a lot and I just built a router table extension on my table saw. Well, guess what router I bought for it. Now i have two, one for my table and one Hitachi router kit. They are powerful enough to do what I need and I like the fact that they are the quietest router on the market. If you are looking for a great router, this is the one. Oh...did I mention the price. You get a great tool at a great price.
