4 out of 5 stars The best tool to use for cutting cement board   December 21, 2008
Zachary Steele (Florida Keys)
If you've ever worked with cement board (e.g., HardiBoard) then you know that cutting it with any kind of saw will result in filling your workspace with highly carcinogenic silicon dust. Faced with a project where I had to panel a large basement room with cement board, I was advised by a local hardware store clerk to consider using cement shears instead of a circular saw - the best advice I ever received from a clerk.

After some brief research, I purchased a factory reconditioned DeWalt cement shear (I had no plans to ever do another cement board project again). Even though I have never used a cement shear before, I was able to make straight, accurate cuts in 4x8 1/4-in. sheets with almost laser-like precision and little effort. It was truly like cutting through butter. No dust. Just a strip of waste a quarter inch wide that curls up through the blade. It was easier than working with sheet rock.

The only reason I did not give this tool five stars is that one of the special screws that hold the blade assembly together broke after about 300 feet of cuts. The good news is that it still held together enough to finish the job. I've sent away for a replacement part and expect that for a cost of less than $10 it will be as good as ever.

If you have to work with cement board, you should not be without one of these cement shears.
